RECP [November RET 07
AFFAIRS OF CHINA,
CONFIDENTIAL.
[36641]
No. 1.
SECTION 1.
482
(No. 678.) Sir,
Sir Edward Grey to Sir F. Bertie.
Foreign Office, November 26, 1907. WITH reference to Mr. Lister's despatch No. 336 of the 4th July last, I transmit to your Excellency a copy of a letter from the Chinese Engineering and Mining Company, regarding the occupation of a certain portion of their land at Chinwangtao by the French military authorities.
This letter, which constitutes the Company's rejoinder to the Memorandum which was communicated to you on the 4th July last by the French Government, entirely traverses the latter's version of the facts, as well as the assumptions on which their case
appears to rest.
I shall be glad if your Excellency will address a communication to the French Government based on the arguments now put forward by the Company, and, at the same time, urge the French Government to accept some arrangement on lines similar to those of the arrangements concluded by the Company with the German and Japanese Governments.
A copy is also inclosed of a despatch from His Majesty's Minister at Peking,† which may be of use to your Excellency in framing your reply to the French Govern.
ment.
I am, &c. (Signed) E. GREY.
* Chinese Engineering and Mining Company, November 5, 1907,
Sir J. Jordan, No. 349, July 21, 1907.
